The Environmental Protection Authority has awarded $400,000 to the City of Canada Bay to support a range of litter prevention initiatives in our community.

“I’m so pleased that we’ve be successful in securing this funding to help tackle litter in our area and work towards a cleaner future for the City of Canada Bay. It will make a significant difference to the health of our local environment, from our streets to our parks and foreshore,” says City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna.

The grant was awarded as part of the fourth intake of the NSW Government’s Litter Prevention Grants Program and will be used to deliver actions set out in Council’s new Litter Management and Prevention Plan.

Council’s plan aligns with the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041, which ambitiously aims for a 60% reduction in litter by 2030, and will focus on three key areas:

  • Operational Excellence. This involves implementing ongoing improvements to Council’s systems to increase the effectiveness of litter management and sustainability, ensuring long-term litter reduction.
  • Activation and Stewardship. Properly managing litter and caring for our environment is everyone’s responsibility. Council will continue to foster community involvement and ownership when it comes to caring for our environment, encouraging collective responsibility towards litter management.
  • Focus on the Foreshore. This involves creating behavioural change to reduce both intentional and unintentional litter, in order to protect the natural environment, particularly in vulnerable waterfront areas.

“Together, these strategies guide Council’s comprehensive approach to creating a cleaner, more sustainable community. We know our community values its stunning foreshore, as well as our leafy streets and green spaces so we are always working hard to protect our natural environment, and we want to invite residents to join us in putting litter in its place,” added Mayor Megna.
