IRON COVE CREEK BRIDGE OPENS

The official opening of the $1 million Iron Cove Creek Bridge will provide a much-needed and safe connection across the Iron Cove Creek canal for thousands of cyclists and pedestrians, says City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas was joined by Ashfield Council Mayor Lucille McKenna, local State Member John Sidoti and representatives from RMS to launch the new infrastructure project, which was delivered by both Councils and funded by a $1 million grant from Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).

“This is a great example of neighbouring Councils coming together, along with the State Government, to deliver an important infrastructure project that will benefit several communities,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“The new bridge will improve safety and access for Bay Run users and is part of an overall strategy to work with our neighbouring Councils to enhance to entire Iron Cove Bay precinct.”

The infrastructure includes a pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Iron Cove Creek Canal near the intersection of Timbrell Drive and the City West Link.  The 30-metre cable bridge connects the existing Bay Run pathway at either end.

“Over 3,500 pedestrians and cyclists used the previous narrow footpath and crossing on an average Sunday so it will certainly be well utilised,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“The new bridge also complements the $2 million upgrade of the Bay Run which we have delivered over the past 18 months, with financial input from RMS.

This included a widened footpath to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians, the installation of new water stations and the upgrading of seat and shade areas.”

At the launch of the new bridge it was also announced that the RMS had committed a further $1.7 million to widen the Bay Run from the new Iron Cove Creek Bridge to Henley Marine Drive at Five Dock.

“We are very excited about extending the improvements to the Bay Run. This section of the project had been identified for delivery in 2016-17, however we can now bring this forward which is fantastic news for our community,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
