Breaking ground on Great North Road upgrade stage two

Council | 03 February 2021

“I am pleased to announce work has begun on the second stage of our Five Dock Streetscape Upgrade project,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

The bustling town centre on Great North Road is the heart of Five Dock. The area is home to Five Dock Library, an array of traditional Italian stores, the site of our beloved annual Ferragosto festival, and more.

“We are always looking to improve the City of Canada Bay’s places and spaces, and this project is part of our long-term vision to activate the town centre,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

The $3.3 million project will see Great North Road from Henry Street to Queens Road upgraded with new street trees and shrubs, high quality pavement and street furniture, and improvements to the drainage system.

Council are working with Sydney Metro to ensure coordination of the new Five Dock metro station construction with the Five Dock Streetscape Upgrade works.

Construction is scheduled be complete by the end of the year, weather permitting. Works will pause for Ferragosto 2021, and recommence again after the festival.

“I encourage you to continue to support local business at this time — all local stores along Great North Road will continue to operate during construction.”
