Business taskforce to tackle COVID recovery

Council | 17 September 2020

“I am proud to announce we have established a taskforce to support local business industries critical to our economy,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“Local business is the beating heart of our economy and this year they’re doing it tough. We have already provided over two million dollars of financial support during the pandemic, and we will continue to partner with and support business through our new taskforce.”

The taskforce, made up of local business representatives, business recovery experts, the Mayor, and two Councillors, will accelerate local business recovery and help Council develop a customised local recovery program for the area.

“We will focus on key sectors which are the foundation of our village retail centres and provide significant local employment for our community,” he said.

These sectors are hospitality, culture and events, finance and business consulting, construction and property, wellness and personal care, and retail.

“The recently reformed Drummoyne Chamber of Commerce was partially as a result of the impact that COVID has affected all of us, as well as the realisation by the business community that it needs to look towards the future and work with the local residents and Council to jointly shape the area that can work for all,” Drummoyne Chamber of Commerce Chair Serge Derkatch said.

“The COVID–19 pandemic established an unforeseen set of circumstances testing of the resilience within ourselves and as a community. The core and financial strength of businesses was the ultimate test of the aftermath of this virus. The result of this post viral world was a greater reliance on a cohesive alliance of both government and local community organisations such as the chamber of commerce networks. Establishing a support mechanism specifically to sustain and safeguard businesses from the brink of collapse into a sustainable and flourishing set of businesses in a post COVID–19 era,” President of the Majors Bay Road Chamber of Commerce Christian Bracci said.

“I look forward to continuing to work with our new taskforce, business community, and our chambers of commerce on the COVID response and recovery effort,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
