Canada Bay residents divert more than 100,000kgs of waste from landfill

Since the HomeCycle program began in the City of Canada Bay in March 2023, our community has booked more than 9,000 home recycling collections, diverting over 100,000kg of material from landfill.

HomeCycle allows residents to book free doorstep collections for those tricky items that don’t belong in your household bins – this includes small e-waste items and batteries, clothing, coffee pods and soft plastics, to name a few.

“Since the program started up in the City of Canada Bay, our HomeCycle collections across the area total upwards of 40,000 bags of recyclable goods. It’s great to see our residents embracing a circular economy by making use of this fantastic recycling service supported by Council,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna.

Clothing and textiles are the number one type of material collected in the area, with collections totalling 1,660kg. This equates to a water saving of 16,600,000L and greenhouse gas savings of 21,580kg. From the clothing collected, 79% of items are rehomed to communities that need them most, while the remaining items are recycled into other products.

“Giving your reusable items a second life through HomeCycle is convenient way to make a real difference to our environment. For those who haven’t tried it yet, I encourage you to give it a go,” Mayor Megna adds.
