Celebrating our Aeolian heritage

An installation of mosaic tiles will be inserted into the paving at Fred Kelly Place and forms the final piece of the $100,000 public art project which also includes an entry marker sculpture and seating.

“We have worked in partnership with the Aeolian Association to create a range of public art to celebrate their community’s contribution to our city,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“Over the past year, images and stories have been collected from the Aeolian community, and been brought to life by artists Nola Diamantopoulos and Nigel Jones."

Collectively the artwork is known as ‘Piazza Eolo’ and is a fitting tribute to acknowledge the Aeolian community, which is one of Canada Bay’s earliest migrant groups, settling here in the 1900s as refugees.

The City of Canada Bay contributed $50,000 to the project and was also successful in securing a $50,000 grant from the State Government to create the public artwork.

“I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all our volunteers who contributed to this project, included Kay Runcie who coordinated the project and Marie MacDermid who also played a leading role,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“The project would not have been such a success without the efforts of the Aeolian community, including Fausto Biviano, President of the Aeolian Association and committee members; the Pugliese family and Councillors Tony Fasanella and Michael Megna.”
