From Italian ginger bread, to gelato, flat bread and antipasto to homemade sausage and sweets, the festival celebrating its 20th anniversary, will have event-goers’ tastebuds dancing.
“We are proud to produce a festival that celebrates food prepared in age-old ways along with new twists on classics,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Helen McCaffrey said. “There really is something to delight everyone.”
Among the stalls at Ferragosto will be deep fried lasagne. This lasagne on a stick featuring layers of pasta, meat and sauce held together in a crispy fried casing, was a huge hit at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and is sure to delight festival goers this year.
If that is not what you are craving, grab a bowl of gnocchi made right before your eyes.
“While enjoying the wonderful food, head to the kitchen stage where MC and long-time Ferragosto supporter, Marie Piccin, will take you through a tasty journey starting with a demonstration by Angelo’s on the Bay,” Mayor Helen McCaffrey said. “This will be followed by demonstrations by Unico Ristorante and Salt Meats Cheese.”
The Salt Meats Cheese demonstration will have you a knots with a live cheese making demonstration of burrata, nodini (little mozzarella knots) with Vannella Cheese. Vannella Cheese was born in Conversano, Puglia. When the family moved to Australia, they brought a little bit of Conversano with them – their delectable cheese. First in Cairns, to be close to the dairy herds, and later moving to the city, to bring the fresh cheese closer to the community.
Ferra Cucina will conclude with a demonstration by well-known guest chef, Massimo Mele. While at the event, why not explore the Italian delis and cafes that call Great North Road home. Ferragosto began in 1998 as an initiative of Five Dock’s Main Street Committee in the Garfield Street car park, but as it grew it moved to Great North Road. As the demand, size and cost of the event increased, so did The City of Canada Bay’s involvement. The festival now stretches for about 800 metres in length plus the side streets off Great North Road.
