Helping plan the City of Canada Bay's sustainable future

Sustainability | 22 July 2019

The City of Canada Bay is urging residents to join its climate change challenge and help plan the Council’s sustainable future.

“I'm pleased to announce we have committed to planting 800 trees across the City from July onwards, after being awarded the NSW Government’s Five Million Trees Grant,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

In addition to the planting made possible by the 5 Million Trees Grant, further greenery will be planted throughout the City as part of Council’s National Tree Day celebrations.

“I encourage the community to get involved with National Tree Day this year at Queen Elizabeth Park in Concord. Come along on Sunday, 28 July 9–11am for a morning of tree planting followed by a barbecue,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“Queen Elizabeth Park contains one of the last remaining remnants of the Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest, an endangered ecological community that our Bushcare team has been working to regenerate.”

In addition to increasing the urban tree canopy, the City of Canada Bay plans to mitigate the impacts of climate change by advocating for better active and public transport and controlling how and where new development occurs.

"While we've made some great strides in our sustainability efforts, there will always be more work to do," Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

"We'll be drafting our new Environmental Strategy to ensure we continue to respond to local environmental issues and hold ourselves accountable through new targets and initiatives."

Residents are invited to visit collaborate.canadabay.nsw.gov.au to join the climate change challenge and share their thoughts about local environmental issues and the City of Canada Bay’s sustainability programs to date.

Through sharing their insights on Collaborate Canada Bay, residents will go in the running to win a $200 dining voucher to a local restaurant of their choice.

Climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and renewable energy targets are some of the topics that residents will be asked to share their thoughts on, helping to shape the City of Canada Bay’s next four-year Environmental Strategy.
