New council-operated childcare centre eases strain for inner west families

| 09 March 2015

“This Council-run facility is a huge support for families in our community who are desperately seeking quality childcare,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“We already have a waiting list of around 230 families at our other Council-managed day care centre at concord () so this new service will certainly ease the pressure.”

The new opened its doors on Monday, 2 March and provides high quality childcare and education for 47 children.

The centre is located in the new community precinct at Concord West, which also includes a new primary school, early childhood health and recreational services.

“Already we have a growing list of families who will be joining us at Victoria Avenue and it is great to welcome them to our community,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“The Centre will offer education programs, highly trained staff, indoor and outdoor play areas, small group sizes, access to health services within the precinct, school readiness programs and much more.

“We have also had great support from local businesses that have helped fit out the Centre such as Ikea at Rhodes and Bing Lee at Drummoyne.”

Trends over the past 18 months show that the inner west has experienced one of Australia’s biggest baby booms and that waiting lists for childcare places in inner city suburbs, including the inner west are extremely long.

There are still a limited number of vacancies remaining for 2-3 year-olds and 3-5 year-olds, however spaces are filling quickly.
