“The announcement of the grant this week is a great boost to our commitment to recycling and waste management and will allow this new drop-off centre to be built,” he said.

“We are also contributing $100,000 annually to managing the site and educating our community.”

The new centre will be built at Council’s existing depot at Five Dock and will provide a free drop-off service for residents across the community.

It will allow residents to dispose of problem waste that cannot be put in kerbside bins such as paints, oils, batteries, gas cylinders, smoke detectors and fluorescent lights.

“Each year we collect between 30 and 40 tonnes of chemicals at our Chemical Clean Out Day which highlights the need for a more permanent drop-off service,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“We are one of the founding partners of the annual day and have hosted it every year for the inner west so this new facility will be a welcome service.”

The grant was awarded by the NSW Environmental Trust as part of the second round of community recycling centre grants in partnership with the EPA under the Waste Less Recycle More program.

“We are already an award-winning Council in the area of sustainability, recycling and waste management and this grant will further enhance our reputation,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
