Report supports horses at Yaralla

| 24 October 2013

A report by the Select Committee on the Agistment of Horses at Yaralla Estate entitled ‘Agistment of horses at Yaralla Estate’ was tabled today, (24 October 2013), in the Legislative Council.

The report found that the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) did not undertake genuine community consultation before making decisions about the future of the Yaralla Estate, it poorly managed the decision making process, and it continued to make decisions about the future of Yaralla Estate without waiting for the recommendations of the Committees’ report.

“This is a great day for our community who we have supported throughout this process,” said Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

"We have always been very disappointed with the lack of community consultation and transparency shown throughout this process.

“We are pleased this has been recognised by the Select Committee and their recommendations include the agistment of horses is restored to Yaralla Estate and public access is maintained.

“There has always been overwhelming community support for the horse owners to have continued public access and we have strongly supported an open and fair tender process in relation to the ongoing agistment of horses at Yaralla Estate.

“We are therefore also pleased the Committee have recommended that commercial rates be charged and that the NSW Police Force Mounted Police Unit and horses owned by members of the community share the paddocks under a co-tenancy arrangement.”

The report and its seven recommendations are now with the Government for consideration. The Government is required to respond to the recommendations within six months.
