St Lukes Oval receives $1.9 million upgrade

Council | 15 May 2023

The City of Canada Bay is excited to announce that the upgrade of St Lukes Oval in Concord is now complete.

“We are committed to providing our community with world-class facilities and I’m thrilled to announce that this much-loved community recreation space has reopened for the public to enjoy,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

The revitalisation of the space is expected to increase playing hours, provide improved wet weather playability, and offer opportunities for better athletic performance with the improvements in quality also providing flood protection and climate change resistance.

Mayor Tsirekas said he was delighted for the beneficiaries of the high-quality facilities which will include popular local sports clubs that operate at St Lukes Oval including Briars Cricket, Concord Giants, Canada Bay Cannons and Inner West Little Athletics.

The project was jointly funded by the NSW Office of Sport and the City of Canada Bay.

Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said projects like these showcase the NSW Government’s commitment to future-proofing recreational spaces to cater for growing communities.

“Upgrades like these mean that our fields can best meet the needs of local communities by being able to accommodate more people and games year-round,” Mr Kamper said.

“These spaces are for everyone to use and not being able to book a field because it can’t keep up with the needs of a community should not be a barrier to getting out there and taking part in an active lifestyle.”

The upgrade will include the widening and complete rebuild of the field to include new irrigation and drainage, a new turf cricket wicket, picket fencing, new bunkers, the installation of a barbecue shelter and a long jump facility with a synthetic warm up track.

“This project will accommodate the projected population and participation growth, as well as support local clubs’ recruitment and retention numbers,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
