Sustainable schools in Canada Bay

The 2014 Small Environmental Schools Grants were presented at this week’s Council meeting and will fund projects ranging from Aquaponic Systems to litter prevention and waste and recycling systems and school gardens.

“This year we provided $10,500 to six schools in our city based on the innovative projects they are planning,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“This grant program supports environmental sustainability projects in schools and school communities. Our aim is to encourage projects that protect or enhance the environment while also developing skills for our young people.”

The 2014 Small Environmental School Grants recipients are as follows:

* For worm farms, compost bins and specialized “We Love Worms” workshops 

* Integrated recycling system for the school playground

* Implementation of an improved litter prevention system in the playground

* Integrated waste, recycling and green waste program and material to enhance school garden project

* Upgrade the current 1000L Aquaponics system

* Materials to extend current school garden program
