This month the City of Canada Bay launched The Place at Rhodes, a collaborative initiative with Burwood Police, Legal Aid NSW, the Women’s and Girl’s Emergency Centre (WAGEC), and the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS).

The Place provides a safe and supportive space where women who may be experiencing domestic and family violence, homelessness or financial stress, can access a variety of agencies offering advice on legal aid, finance, accommodation, and more – all in one convenient location.

“I am pleased to announce the launch of The Place at Rhodes, a significant milestone, showcasing Council’s and the wider community’s collective commitment to supporting women in Canada Bay,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna.

Speakers included Canada Bay’s 2024 Citizen of the Year, Superintendent Christine McDonald from Burwood Police, as well as representatives from WAGEC and Legal Aid.

“This new service will offer a suite of support, including legal assistance, emergency housing, and advocacy, ensuring that women have access to essential information, resources and help when they need it,” added Mayor Megna.

By bringing together these essential services, the initiative seeks to streamline the process of obtaining help, making it easier for women to navigate their options and receive the assistance they require.

“This collaborative effort highlights the importance of community partnerships and the dedication of all the organisations involved in fostering a safer and more supportive environment for women. The Place at Rhodes is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose and I’m proud that Council can be a part of it,” said Mayor Megna.
