During Pride Month this June, join us for a queer comics workshop where you can get creative and make your own zines!
Zines — short for magazines or fanzines — are small works of original or appropriated texts and images, often reproduced using a copy machine. Historically created by countercultures and marginalised communities, zines have long been a powerful way to share stories, ideas and experiences directly with others.
During the workshop, we’ll explore a brief history of queer comics and zines, and discuss how you don’t need formal artistic training to tell a compelling story. We will then go through telling a comic story by starting with a beginning and an endpoint, and you’ll get to fill in the blanks with whatever you like!
About your teacher, Rowan
Rowan Grover is a queer cartoonist working on Gadigal land. They have tabled at comic and zine fairs such as Other Worlds, Comic Con-versation, and SCAMP. Their latest work is the dark fantasy romp, ALL THE DEVILS ARE HERE. Rowan has contributed to anthologies such as Sticky Beak and Monster Mashup Comic Anthology.
They work primarily in genre fiction, creating character-focused stories and filling out the world around them as they go. They love to exaggerate the real in their work, as they feel it helps accentuate the emotions they want to convey.
All materials will be provided, though attendees are welcome to bring their own if they wish.
Light refreshments will be served on the day.
🎨 This is a Create.Make.Connect event. These events invite our community to slow down, get hands-on, and enjoy the simple pleasure of making something creative together.
