As Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly becomes implemented into our daily lives, what might its effects mean for the future of our society and culture?
In the lead up to our popular Human Robot Friendship Ball, The Learning Space invites multi-media artist Gen Collier to show her fascinating artwork Kylie Jenner-ated. This computer-generated video uses AI as an artistic tool in an attempt to make visible what goes on inside these complex systems.
For this work, the artist collected hundreds of images of Kylie Jenner, one of the most influential figures impacting contemporary notions of aesthetics, beauty and culture. In the same way that YouTube and Spotify use AI to learn the behaviour of users and suggest what they might like to purchase next, AI was used to sort through these images. Kylie Jenner-ated is the output of this system learning human aesthetics, demonstrating the internal structures and processes of AI learning.
Gen Collier is a practicing multi-media artist working at the intersection of digital media, experimental sound and music. Materials central to her practice include her laptop, data, code, software, programs and open-source libraries. She examines the effects of emerging technologies – particularly advances in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning – on society and how they are beginning to shape culture and the way we experience information today.
You can view this free exhibition during opening hours in The Digital Gallery at The Learning Space from Monday, 27 May until Sunday, 16 June.
