Interpreting Sky Country: First Nations Astronomy Talk

Interpreting Sky Country: First Nations Astronomy Talk

The Connection View in maps

Join us for an immersive one-hour journey into the night sky!

Presented by Koori Kinnections’ Cultural Educator Trent Kelly, this session explores the night sky – not merely as a canopy of stars, but as a living map, a record of time, seasons, and culture. From the perspectives of Australia’s First Peoples, the skies have long guided food gathering and hunting, defined the seasons and told stories of people, animals and country.

In this session, Trent Kelly, a proud Yuin and Wailwan man born and raised in the La Perouse Aboriginal community on Dharawal country, draws on his lived experience and cultural knowledge to share how the changing night skies are traditionally interpreted, and what we can learn from this knowledge today.

Whether you are a student, educator, bush-walker, stargazer, or simply curious, this presentation offers a rich blending of science, story, and culture — expanding your view of the night sky beyond the familiar, and connecting you to the cultural knowledge of Australia’s First Nations.

Photos and video may be taken during the event and shared across the library's and Council's communication channels (including but not limited to social media and eNewsletters). Please notify a staff member if you do not wish to be photographed or filmed.
