"We are working with local schools on the project, which will result in a short video being produced to commemorate the life of a World War I soldier or service personnel connected to this area," he said.

"The list of our former community members is far-reaching with over 1,600 names. These brave men and women lived all around Canada Bay, from Drummoyne to Rhodes and the suburbs in between, and this project will tell their story.

"There are three schools involved – Five Dock Public School, Concord Public School and Concord High School and they will work with our library teams to create the videos.

" will be an important project to commemorate the Centenary but also engages with young people to learn more about the journey of our servicemen and women."

To create the video projects, the three schools have access to the portable multimedia labs from Council’s two libraries. The completed videos (that meet guidelines) will be uploaded to Council’s website and other online media during the commemorative year.

recently received a $5,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Anzac Community Grants program, which encourages culturally diverse communities and young people to deepen their knowledge about the legacy of Australia’s involvement in World War I.

It is just one project the City of Canada Bay is supporting as part of the Centenary of Anzac in 2014-15. Other projects include:

We are searching for descendants or relatives of Mr W.S.Tait who developed the Liryclea Estate in Russell Lea in 1915. We are researching the history of three street names in the Estate – Mons, Reims and Liege Streets – which appear to commemorate battles which occurred in 1914 at the start of the Great War. The research is part of a Centenary of ANZAC project, which aims to recognise Australian allies in World War I during the Centenary of ANZAC next year. Anyone with information about the development of Liryclea Estate or descendants of Mr Tait are encouraged to contact our Place Management Coordinator Vincent Conroy on 9911 6422.

We will be supporting a special Dawn Service planned for the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway at Rhodes Park, Concord on 19 April, 2015. The Dawn Service will be held to commemorate the first boats that landed at ANZAC Cove. The event is being organised by the Kokoda Track Memorial Board and we are a funding partner and stakeholder.

Upgrade of the war memorial at Five Dock War Memorial Park thanks to funding from Five Dock RSL.

Queen Elizabeth Park Pavilion of Honour conservation works thanks to funding partners Concord RSL.

We are developing a project to allow those participating in the Kokoda Track Dawn Service next year to be provided with a commemorative and artistic poppy to create a Field of Remembrance in Brays Bay Reserve – this memorial precinct is located close to the Kokoda Tack Memorial Walkway. (This project is still in early days).
