Patrick Kayrooz won first prize in the Finest House Garden category for his garden that has been a labour of love for more than nine years.
“We have some amazing gardens in Canada Bay and the entries we received this year show just how much pride our community has in their gardens,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
“I was extremely impressed by Patrick’s stunning garden and the fact that he shares his love of gardening with other local residents.”
Patrick’s property backs onto a cul-de-sac shared with Housing Commission units in Five Dock and over the years he has worked closely with residents in the units to encourage them to take pride in their surrounds, resulting in a reduction rubbish and graffiti around the Housing Commission property.
Patrick has shared his passion for gardening with his neighbours and taught fellow local residents to take pride in where they live and how to manage the garden with great results, and now they often share tips with each other.
“I really enjoy gardening as it is very grounding and I am pleased to share this passion with my neighbours,” he said.
“Originally both the front and back of the property was exposed but we’ve installed hedges to make it more private. I have also created rooms within rooms in the back garden to accommodate different themes.
“My garden always changes and I believe you have allow it to grow with you.”
The idea for the competition originated when enthusiasts from Concord Garden Club approached Mayor Angelo Tsirekas to introduce a garden competition in 2012. Now in its second year it has grown bigger and better.
