Council merger update

| 26 September 2016

Earlier this year, Strathfield Council launched legal action against the State Government's amalgamation proposal, citing legal flaws in the delegate's report.

Justice Tim Moore, of the Land and Environment Court, handed down his judgement on Tuesday, 20 September 2016, stating there were "defects" in the report from the State Government appointed delegate who examined the proposed merger.

Justice Moore ruled the Boundaries Commission or a delegate of the Office of Local Government would have to redo sections of the report and the inquiries that recommended the merger. While this means Burwood, City of Canada Bay and Strathfield councils have not merged, it leaves the door open for these entities to be merged in the future.

Under the , state governments have the power to merge councils.

City of Canada Bay Council staff and councillors are continuing to work hard and deliver services to the highest standards during this period of uncertainty. In the past month, City of Canada Bay has won three awards -the most recent going to our Technical Services and Operations team for their efforts in trialling an innovative environmental pavement in Victoria Ave Concord West.  This project was recognised at both state and national level.

We extend our gratitude to residents and ratepayers for their patience and understanding during this time of uncertainty.
