E-Waste collection

| 13 March 2013

This year's e-waste collection day in February was the most successful ever says City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

"We've always received a large turnout to our e-waste collection day but this year was exceptional with 36 tonnes of waste collected; around 850 vehicles attending and eight vehicles at a time unloading," he said.

The day provided a great opportunity to recycle and dispose of electronic items without polluting landfill sites.

Residents were notified of household items that could be recycled such as irons, kettles, vacuums, TVs, DVDs, game consoles and computer equipment.

"There was a huge influx of residents using the service and they came by car, van, ute, bus and some even walked. One local resident caught two buses and walked the rest of the way with a trolley laden with her e-waste," Mayor Tsirekas said.

"I was there on the day and resident feedback was positive, with people commending us for arranging an event which protects the future environment."

Hundreds of home entertainment, household and computer items have been recycled through this annual event, preventing potentially toxic rubbish going to waste disposal areas. The e-waste drop off day is one of a number of programs run by the City of Canada Bay throughout the year to help protect the environment. Household chemical waste clean up, Team Up to Clean Up and other programs are a feature on Council's calendar.
