Ferragosto welcomes Johnny Ruffo

Community & events | 12 August 2019

Singer, songwriter, and former Home and Away star, Johnny Ruffo, will bring the stage to life at Ferragosto on Sunday, 18 August.

“Sydney's most beloved Italian street festival, Ferragosto, returns to Great North Road in Five Dock for another year,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“I am pleased to share Ferragosto will be Johnny’s first opportunity to publically showcase his new music to thousands of festival goers.”

"I can't wait to get back on stage and perform at Ferragosto. Having been to ferragosto for the last few years, I'm really excited to be part of the festivities this year," Johnny Ruffo said.

"Broken Glass is my new single, and this will be my first time performing for a live audience."

Johnny has performed on stage with international hip hop superstars Salt-N-Pepa and Guy Sebastian, and was even hand-selected to support global pop sensations One Direction on their record-breaking tour down under. You may also remember Johnny from his appearance on a variety of Channel 7, 9 and 10 Morning Shows and his time on Home and Away from 2013–2016.

The world’s number-one selling bilingual comedian, Joe Avati, will also grace the main stage with his presence for a laugh-out-loud show. Festival goers can also enjoy a variety of performances by local community groups and schools, who will bring their home grown talent to the Ferragosto stages.

Located in the heart of the festival, Fred Kelly Place will host the Ferra Club stage, bringing DJs and instrumental music to the masses. Ferra Piazza, just across the road, is a haven for festival goers to sit and relax, sipping on vino.

The kitchen stage in St Alban’s Church grounds is the perfect spot to grab a seat and soak up the culinary talent and entertainment on offer. This year MasterChef contestant Aldo Ortado will cap off the cooking program with a fun and engaging show.

Over 150 food and merchandise stalls are also on offer at this year’s festival. Explore the huge variety of Italian food stalls, restaurants and cafes and enjoy delicious street eats like ravioli, pizza and gnocchi, and treat yourself to a famous ricotta cheesecake made by Pasticceria Papa, Ferragosto’s Presenting Partner.

Do you have a competitive edge? Join one of the competitions at Ferragosto, run by festival sponsors.

Try your luck at Pasticceria Papa’s cannoli eating competition on the main stage. Visit the kitchen stage to speed eat your way through a mountain of pasta at Club Five Dock RSL’s pasta eating challenge and guess the correct gelati flavour with Cremeria De Luca. Take your young ones to the Children’s stage for Duccio Gelato’s crazy cones gelato building competition.

“In the Italian tradition of the Ferragosto celebrations, this year’s festival will be preceded by a feast day procession along Great North Road. Join us at 9:30am to celebrate the occasion,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“I also encourage patrons to support the 10,000 Italian Roses Project by donating at this year’s festival. The project aims to raise awareness about breast screening among the Italian community in New South Wales.”

“From wonderful Italian performances and delicious cuisine, to lively competitions and Italian cinema, I hope you enjoy everything Ferragosto has to offer this year.”

Ferragosto is on Sunday, 18 August 10am–4pm on Great North Road, Five Dock.
