Hat trick of awards for City of Canada Bay

| 08 November 2016

Council’s Water for our Community stormwater harvesting scheme won the Environmental Enhancement Award at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (NSW) Awards on Thursday, 27 October.

The scheme automatically irrigates 15 sporting fields and two golf courses in the City by harvesting stormwater from St Luke’s Canal in Concord, treating it onsite at Cintra Park, and distributing it via a 4.8 km reticulation pipe network.

“This is wonderful recognition for Council of our recycling scheme that meets 95 per cent of these green spaces’ irrigation needs and reduces City’s entire reliance on potable water by a massive 75 per cent,” said Mayor Helen McCaffrey.

At the same Awards, Council was Highly Commended for Excellence in Road Safety Engineering for its Bay Run Upgrade to improve pedestrian, cycle and road safety. This implemented a 40 km/h high pedestrian usage speed zone and separated pedestrian and cycle paths to reduce the number of incidents on the much loved Bay Run.

And at the National Playspace Awards on Tuesday, 25 October, City of Canada Bay was Highly Commended for our Phoenix Park design for playspaces costing less than $500,000. The park and playground provide outdoor recreation space, as well as a popular viewpoint, for a community that lives exclusively in apartments looking down on the Rhodes playspace.

“These awards recognise Council’s holistic and ongoing commitment to excellence in serving our community. Work teams across the entire Council contributed to earning these awards and I congratulate everyone involved,” Mayor McCaffrey said.
