"Rhodes is our fastest growing community, with a population of around 14,000 predicted in the next two years and it's vital we cater for this growth with new infrastructure and community spaces," he said.
"The current projects include major road works and footpath construction on Blaxland Road and the completion of the John Whitton Bridge project at the northern end of the Peninsula."
The Blaxland Road precinct is currently undergoing a transformation, with the construction of a shared bicycle path that will run from the Rhodes Railway Station to Leeds Street, providing an essential piece of recreational infrastructure and enhancing cycling facilities around the City. It will also provide a valuable cycling link to the recently completed John Whitton Bridge cycle path.
In addition, a major footpath upgrade has started on Blaxland Road, along with road resurfacing on Blaxland Road, Leeds Street and Cavell Avenue. Significant landscaping will also occur along Blaxland Road.
"Residents will also be pleased to see the installation of new traffic lights on Blaxland Road and Leeds Street. This is in response to community feedback about the traffic conditions in this area, which will be greatly improved thanks to the lights," Mayor Tsirekas said.
"The other major project is the completion of the landscaping around the John Whitton Bridge. Our community and visitors to Rhodes are really embracing this space and it is great to see the end result.
"Rhodes is continuing to grow and it is becoming a real community and neighbourhood. We are working with our residents to provide them with great facilities to ensure they embrace living here."
One of the biggest capital works projects in the next three years will be the construction of the Rhodes Community Precinct, with a DA expected to be lodged in April for the design of the space.
