Keep Australia Beautiful

| 26 February 2013

City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas is supporting a grants program aimed at empowering community groups to clean up their neighbourhoods.

Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) NSW, working with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), is offering funding to community groups to undertake a litter audit in local parks, streets or shopping areas. Following the audit, community groups can then apply for a grant to tackle any litter hot spots.

“This is a great way to address littering and encourage the community to get involved in improving their local environment,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“Litter is a widespread issue and it is only by working together that we can address the problem. Committing resources to tackle the issue, while also engaging with the community, is a positive move.”

Application for the grants is a two stage process. The first stage will provide grants of $300 for community groups to build their skills and understand local litter problems. They can then use this information and data to develop an effective application for a grant of up to $5,000 to address local problems. The application process is now open, with applicants encouraged to register for Stage 1 by Tuesday, 2 April 2013 to be eligible to apply for Stage 2.
