Mayor Angelo Tsirekas invites the community to a Health Panel on Bowel Cancer at Concord Hospital on Wednesday, 13 February at 6.30pm.
Australia has one of the highest reporting rates of bowel cancer in the world. However, with early detection, this disease is also one of the most curable; unfortunately fewer than 40% of bowel cancers are detected early.
“People need to understand this illness and the importance of early detection. I urge everyone to pay attention to their bodies and get regular checkups” Mayor, Angelo Tsirekas said.
Led by a professional panel specialising in bowel cancer prevention, treatment and nutrition, the panellists discuss ways to prevent bowel cancer, what the symptoms are, and the importance of early detection.
The panel will also talk about living with and after bowel cancer, correct eating habits, regaining bowel control, as well as where to get practical and emotional support and advice. Based on current trends, 1 in 12 Australians will develop bowel cancer before the age of 85.
The panel will consist of Professor Marc Gladman of Colorectal Sugery, Concord Hospital; Ian Whiteley, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Stomal therapy and Wound Management; Sonia Khatari, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Colorectal Cancer; Tammy Farrell, Bowel Cancer Association and Georgina Moore, Nutritionist, Moore4Life.
Light refreshments will be served from 6.30pm for a 7pm start. The evening will conclude by 9pm.
