“Mangroves are natural ecosystems that occupy our foreshore between the land and the river and their importance has never really been understood,” he said.
“They provide a habitat and food source for many local species, maintain water quality and reduce erosion.
“Unfortunately mangroves have been widely subjected to clearing, degradation and dredging in the past.
“Therefore, we are taking the lead in educating our community on the benefits of mangroves, in order to sustain our environmental assets for future generations to come.”
A free information evening will be held on Wednesday, 13 November from 6.30-8.30pm at Chiswick Community Centre; with a Specialist highlighting the importance of these fascinating estuaries.

The vandalism of mangroves is an ongoing problem. Mangrove forests are protected under NSW Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) legislation. The City of Canada Bay offers a reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of those who damage mangroves.
