This year marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Woollarawarre Bennelong of the Wangal clan whose lands included present day Canada Bay. To mark the anniversary, Dr Keith Vincent Smith will give a talk about Bennelong’s tumultuous life from his birth in 1764 to his death in 1813.
Bennelong’s life was as colourful as it was controversial. He befriended Governor Arthur Philip and travelled to England to meet King George III.
He was described as “courageous, intelligent, tender and funny”, while also having a quick temper and being very vain.
The talk will be held on . It is a free event but bookings are essential.
Five Dock Library will also be involved in NAIDOC celebrations and will host an art exhibition from 25 June – 29 July. The exhibition captures the spirit and culture represented in the contemporary Aboriginal art world and will feature artists Nicole Monks, Chico Monks and Kerrie Kenton. The exhibition will launch on Tuesday, 25 June where guests can meet the artists.
