PokeStops posing danger

| 26 July 2016

“We have written a submission to Niantic asking for the removal of two of the three PokeStops in Peg Paterson Park, Rhodes as we consider the volume of both traffic and pedestrians to be potentially dangerous,” he said.

“There have been a number of concerning instances already including an emergency services vehicle having difficulty reaching an apartment fire due to traffic congestion, traffic accidents, and reports of motorcycles using cycle and footpaths to get around traffic congestion.

“Since the game’s release we have seen a continuous increase in visitors to this small park and the game’s traction does not appear to be slowing down.

“Council wants to proactively address the situation before something serious occurs, while still encouraging gamers to have fun playing Pokemon GO,” Mr Sawyer said.

“We have Pokestops and gyms throughout our local government area, but the intensity of activity in this small park is cause for concern. For this reason, we are asking that two of the three Pokestops be removed."

Council has already put in place a number of measures and will continue to provide these additional services, however a longer term solution is needed.

“We encourage the community to enjoy the beautiful public spaces across the City of Canada Bay area while playing at the variety of PokeStop and PokeGym locations," Mr Sawyer said.

“We would, however, like gamers to remain aware of their physical location, be considerate of the people around them and play safely."
