We are taking the lead on protecting our foreshore with the introduction of a mangrove protection and education program, says City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.
“This education program focuses on the benefits of mangroves and provides information on how they should be protected,” he said.
“The latest education initiative is the installation of new signage at Rodd Point highlighting the importance of mangroves to our natural environment.”
Mangroves are natural ecosystems that occupy our foreshore between the land and the river. They provide a habitat and food sources for many local species, maintain water quality and reduce erosion.
“Unfortunately mangroves have been subjected to clearing, degradation and dredging in the past and this education program is vital in sustaining our environmental assets for generations to come,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
The signs have gone up along the foreshore, with the latest signage at Rodd Point.
The project has been jointly funded by Council and NSW Government’s Estuary Management Program.
Mangroves are also protected under NSW Department of Primary Industries legislation. The City of Canada Bay also offers a reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of anyone damaging mangroves. If you have any information, contact us on 9911 6555.
