Take 3 school litter presentation

| 12 July 2016

Deputy Mayor Helen McCaffrey congratulated City of Canada Bay school students for their litter-prevention campaigns, created in partnership with not-for-profit organisation, Take 3.

Students presented their campaigns to the Deputy Mayor, Take 3 representatives and fellow students at Concord Community Centre last month and received certificates for their creative approaches to conservation.

“These campaigns were very impressive. They included litter-free lunchbox designs, bin stickers, sculptures made from recycled materials and lunchtime rubbish roundups,” said Deputy Mayor Helen McCaffrey.

The educational strategies target local marine pollution and will be implemented at St Ambrose Catholic Primary School, Concord High School, St Marks Catholic Primary School and Abbotsford Primary Public School.

Marine scientist Michelle Blewitt spoke about the impacts of litter on marine life, in particular, the impacts on dolphins within the Parramatta River.

Take 3’s Dolphin Project aims to educate students of the harmful effects litter has on our local marine life and help stop waste from entering our waterways.

“It is beneficial to inspire a proactive approach to environmental protection at a young age,” said Deputy Mayor McCaffrey.

Resources and services needed to implement these strategies will be funded by Council’s Small Environmental Grants program.

encourages people to take three pieces of rubbish with them when they leave the beach or a public waterway in an effort to reduce marine debris.
