RECYCLED WATER FOR OUR PARKS PROJECT
This summer, the future of water in the City of Canada Bay will be secure with our $3.7 million Water for our Community stormwater harvesting project now complete, Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.
“With the prediction of warmer days and nights, and a drier than average summer, we are in the fortunate position of being able to irrigate 15 playing fields and two golf courses with treated stormwater harvested from St Lukes Canal at Concord ” he said.
The recently completed treatment facility was constructed over two years and includes; an underground pipe network measuring four kilometres long, custom-built water storage tanks and water treatment facility, which are now installed at Cintra Park in Concord. An additional water storage tank has also been installed at Massey Park Golf Course.
The treatment facility filters and disinfects stormwater harvested from St Lukes Canal at Concord. The water is tested to ensure it meets national recycled water quality requirements and the clean water is sent to parks and golf courses for irrigation via the underground pipes.
“As well as providing a secure source of water for our City, this project will save 180 million litres of drinking water each year – which is a fantastic outcome,” Mayor Tsirekas added.
The stormwater treatment plant is the biggest of its kind in metropolitan Sydney providing irrigation for an area of 520,000m2, equivalent to 52 football fields. The project has been made possible thanks to community support and $1.89 million in funding under the Australian Government’s National Urban Water and Desalination Plan, together with contributions from the NSW State Government’s Office of Environment and Heritage and Council.
